Overview
Turians are humanoid people from Palaven, recognized by facial plates and a society that gives military and civic service unusual prominence. The Hierarchy’s institutions shape duty, but do not make every turian a soldier. Garrus’s experiences expose disagreements about justice and authority; the species’ political history also includes war with humans and turian deployment of the genophage. Those events belong to actors and periods, not innate moral characteristics.
A BioWare Alliance News Network dispatch dramatizes the Hierarchy’s response to the Reapers. Dated September 28, 2186 within the fiction, it reports Primarch Fedorian’s declaration of war after communications near Taetrus fail. He recognizes simultaneous attacks across distant systems and urges resolve instead of uncontrolled anger. The correspondent belongs to a named military messaging organization, making the report an institutional voice rather than direct access to every citizen’s views. The broadcast’s disruptive public reaction also complicates an image of uniformly unemotional discipline.
The 2012 Resurgence announcement places Firebase Condor on a Palaven moon, where refuelling and repair support the turian fleet. This is a specific military location, not the species’ sole settlement. Andromeda’s 2017 APEX briefing follows Tiran Kandros from kett captivity and escape to organizing Nexus militia. Cooperation with Drack over missing patrols extends that role into a new galaxy.
First appearances & development
The retained original-game setting and Revelation-era appearances precede the official 2012 wartime dispatch. Andromeda’s 2017 APEX fiction presents turian participation in the Initiative separately. Real publication dates are distinguished from the 2186 date assigned to the fictional news report.
Canon & continuity
The original species summary is retained from the earlier reference-based account. Complete accessible BioWare articles establish Fedorian’s broadcast, Firebase Condor’s role and Kandros’s militia story. The older Fandom reference was unavailable on this pass, so no new anatomical detail is attributed to a fresh read of it.

Family, evolution & connections
Birdlike military brief and collaborative turian iteration
Watts says the turian brief combined a proud, birdlike people with a strong military tradition. Four artists iterated Garrus’s design before the team settled it. The bird comparison is an explicit design prompt, not evidence of an Earth bird ancestor.
