Overview

Toydarians have wings, projecting snouts and webbed feet. The official species guide identifies resistance to manipulation through the Force, alongside a strong-willed reputation. That statement concerns influence, not immunity to every possible Force power. Their world, Toydaria, is described separately as temperate terrain of fog, forests and swamps. A species outline and a planetary landscape do not alone explain every citizen’s profession or political convictions.

Watto makes the species prominent in The Phantom Menace. The Mos Espa dealer owns Shmi and Anakin Skywalker, sponsors Anakin’s racing and wagers away his claim to the boy when Qui-Gon wins the Boonta Eve bet. He later sells Shmi to Cliegg Lars. His gambling and slaveholding belong to a particular character’s history; they are not presented here as universal Toydarian institutions.

The Clone Wars introduces King Katuunko as another social role. Initially wary of both warring factions, he prioritizes his people’s safety and values honesty. Yoda’s conduct persuades him to support the Republic. The contrast with Watto gives Toydarians more than one place in the story: an individual commercial antagonist and a sovereign weighing diplomatic commitments. The king’s judgment also shows that resisting a mind trick does not prevent persuasion through observed character.

First appearances & development

The selected screen baseline is Watto’s 1999 film appearance. Attack of the Clones revisits his dealings in 2002, while The Clone Wars supplies Katuunko and Toydaria’s wartime setting. Those published contexts are distinguished from the chronology within the fictional war.
