Overview
Gungans are native to Naboo and have lungs that permit long periods of breath holding. The official species description identifies a flexible cartilaginous skeleton, a tough bill used to burrow for food and muscular tongues that gather mollusks and smaller amphibians from swamps. Amphibious anatomy connects them with water without making them merely wildlife: they are a sapient people with institutions, technology and a military.
Otoh Gunga lies beneath Lake Paonga. Its enclosed spaces use hydrostatic force fields to hold breathable air while allowing inhabitants to swim through the barriers. Its sweeping buildings are grown from their construction material. The city contains the High Board Room of the Gungan representative council. These details directly contradict outsiders' dismissal of Gungans as technologically primitive; underwater settlement is an engineered environment rather than a collection of unprotected caves.
Boss Nass's official biography supplies a particular political history. He preserves Otoh Gunga's isolation and initially refuses Jedi appeals, believing the Trade Federation's invading army will not find the hidden city. That judgment fails, and the Gungans take refuge in their Sacred Place. Amidala's humble appeal persuades him to commit the Grand Army, opening cooperation between Naboo's two peoples. The shift is an event in the story, not proof that every Gungan leader holds the same policy forever.
The species page associates them with personal energy shields and boomas as well as the Republic and their own High Council. Their appearance across the prequels and The Clone Wars makes a people's identity broader than Jar Jar Binks's comic traits. Institutions, anatomy and named individuals should remain distinct; neither one character's clumsiness nor an outsider's prejudice is a collective biological characteristic.
First appearances & development
The selected initial film witness is The Phantom Menace in 1999. The maintained Databank also lists later films and The Clone Wars. Its Return of the Jedi listing is not used to date the species to the 1983 original cut: later film editions and additions require version-specific investigation rather than an appearance-list shortcut.
Canon & continuity
The complete species, Otoh Gunga and Boss Nass Databank text was read, including the political biography captions. They support anatomy, engineering and the isolation-to-alliance sequence. The article does not claim a newly viewed film, exhaustive city census or universal Gungan constitutional history; related video links were not watched.
