Overview
A to'raken resembles a raken but is larger and brown rather than gray. The guide account distinguishes its plant diet, heavier lift and longer endurance from the smaller flyer's agility and speed. It needs a running start for takeoff and can carry cargo or passengers that a scouting mount could not. This is a functional difference within the empire's air operations, rather than a new name for an adult raken.
Seanchan forces use to'raken to transport people, equipment and troops. The Path of Daggers even presents a rider's complaint that Suroth uses them for her entourage instead of military needs, placing the creature within politics as well as tactics. Later raids exploit transport capacity alongside reconnaissance flyers. The handler hierarchy ranks to'raken work differently from raken work, so an assignment can carry social meaning. Injury may cause a mount to seek a landing that its rider considers unsafe, reminding the reader that a flying transport remains an animal making its own survival decisions.
First appearances & development
The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time (1997), chapter 18, documents the guide treatment indexed here. The Path of Daggers (1998) provides a specific novel transport account, followed by the White Tower raid. The guide's earlier publication is kept separate from the first inspected chapter-specific novel citation.
Canon & continuity
Public To'raken revision and Encyclopaedia WoT's Toraken page identify the guide and novel references. The larger creature's flight, diet and handling distinctions are reference-mediated, not a freshly read guide chapter. Exact cargo distances are omitted because a general species profile does not need to turn a selected carrying example into a universal flight specification.
