Overview

Thorn beasts, called saaliban in the official account, are resilient herbivores associated with worlds damaged by catastrophe. Forerunner Lifeworkers cultivated their use in restoring unstable environments, and the animals later became important to the Jiralhanae on nuclear-scarred Doisac. Their continued survival supplies food and other useful bodily materials, making them relevant to everyday life as well as an exotic fauna list.

The Covenant subsequently spread the animals to colonies for practical purposes, echoing the older reseeding role without necessarily understanding that historical parallel. The publisher describes populations adapting quickly when properly attended, which belongs to this fictional biological account rather than a universal real breeding rule. Thorn-beast development assets predate the 2022 encyclopedia treatment, but their existence does not prove a shipped original-game encounter. One profile keeps the animal's cultural and ecological functions together; it does not multiply every planetary population into a named variant.

First appearances & development

Thorn beasts began as wildlife developed for an earlier version of Halo rather than a populated encounter in the released Combat Evolved. The 2022 encyclopedia gives the Saaliban a canonical ecological and cultural setting, reproduced in the official Cutting Room Lore article. That subsequent account is the baseline here; restored development assets are a separate production history.

Canon & continuity

The official Cutting Room Lore excerpt directly supports Saaliban restoration, adaptability and Jiralhanae use. Cutting Room Floor supplies production context for the abandoned wildlife. The encyclopedia is cited through the publisher’s extract, not represented as a complete fresh reading. Wider claims about intelligence, domestication or specific breeding mechanics are outside the evidence used in this treatment.
