Overview

The original English manual presents red and blue Tektites as jumping creatures, with the red ones more active. Later games retain the compact body and long legs but place them in different terrain. Ocarina of Time's red Tektites inhabit Death Mountain Trail, while blue ones stand and leap on water at Lake Hylia, Zora River and the Water Temple. A nearby Megaton Hammer blow can overturn either form. Their mobility therefore comes from short, repeated bounds rather than flight, and the water-dwelling form makes an apparently safe shoreline another possible approach route.

The Adventure of Link gives Tektites unusually resistant armor and eye-fired projectiles; its Fire spell is the effective answer to them. This differs from the relatively fragile, sword-vulnerable creatures in several other games. Majora's Mask also uses blue Tektites hidden in the Snowhead region's snow, where their movement can be heard before they emerge. Color, location and vulnerability need to be read within each game's encounter rules rather than treated as permanent subspecies anatomy.

First appearances & development

Tektites appear in The Legend of Zelda in 1986. Selected comparisons here cover The Adventure of Link in 1987, Ocarina of Time in 1998 and Majora's Mask in 2000. The shared name is treated as a recurring creature design, separate from the geological material called tektite.

Canon & continuity

The original English booklet, printed page 29, was visually inspected in Nintendo's scan. Zelda Wiki provides the later-game movement, terrain and vulnerability accounts. Its animal comparisons are descriptive analogies; no examined creator testimony establishes an actual spider-crab design source or a real biological classification for these monsters.
