Overview
An Octorok is an octopus-like monster best known for firing rocks or other projectiles from its mouth. The original game's land-dwelling examples already departed from an ordinary aquatic animal, making the design part of Hyrule's fantastic wildlife. Later appearances place related forms in water, grass and other environments, often concealing them until Link draws near.
Its attacks frequently reward observation and, in selected games, the use of a shield to return a projectile. That tactic is not an identical rule in every title. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom include several Octorok varieties with distinct habitats and interactions, while older games use simpler movement and firing patterns. The profile groups the recurring monster design without assuming one ecology, loot table or equipment interaction applies across the series.
First appearances & development
The Legend of Zelda (1986), Japanese original release. This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Different games and timeline branches vary; Breath of the Wild traits are not applied to every depiction.

Family, evolution & connections
Octopuses
Nintendo’s original English Legend of Zelda manual identifies the Octorok as an octopus living above ground, with rock-spitting attacks. This makes the animal association explicit within the fiction. Real octopuses are marine molluscs; the guide’s terrestrial movement and projectiles belong to the game creature. The manual does not identify a particular octopus species or supply a designer’s inspiration account.
