Overview
Lizalfos are reptilian humanoid monsters that combine lizard-like bodies with the use of weapons. Their agility frequently distinguishes them from bulkier enemies: jumping, dodging and rapid movement can be as important as their attacks. Ocarina of Time's dungeon encounters make them recognizable duelists, while later games expand their appearance, equipment and relationship with the surrounding terrain.
Breath of the Wild's Lizalfos can blend into environments and use different weapons or elemental attacks according to their type. Those behaviors should not be transferred wholesale to every older depiction. Named relatives and colored variants may share a visual family without being mechanically identical. This entry treats Lizalfos as a recurring monster design with intelligent combat behavior; it does not infer a single worldwide culture, reproductive biology or history beyond what the games establish.
First appearances & development
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998) is a selected early three-dimensional treatment; earlier naming and design history is not exhaustively audited. This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Different games and timeline branches vary; Breath of the Wild traits are not applied to every depiction.
Canon & continuity
Primary basis: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998); comparison: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017). The linked reference guide compares appearances and cites game dialogue or manuals where available. Enemy behavior and the meaning of variant colors must be checked within the selected game; no universal statistics or exhaustive timeline history are claimed.

Family, evolution & connections
Lizards (Ocarina of Time design motif)
In Nintendo’s interview with the original Ocarina of Time team, Haruhana identifies Lizalfos among the enemies he drew, and Takizawa names lizards as the relevant visual theme. This supports a broad animal motif for that production’s depiction. It does not identify a particular lizard species, establish the origin of earlier Lizalfos appearances or give the fictional creature a scientifically inferred ancestral branch.
