Overview
The legacy fifth-edition creature can destroy structures efficiently and resist many attacks through its carapace and other protections. Reflective Carapace specifically negates or returns certain spells; it is not blanket immunity to every magical effect. The 2014 version uses a bite, claws, horns and tail, along with Frightful Presence. A grappled, sufficiently small victim can be swallowed, losing sight and freedom of movement while acid harms it. A trapped creature can cause enough internal injury to force regurgitation, and the corpse supplies an escape route if the monster dies. The published encounter therefore includes rescue possibilities rather than treating swallowing as instantaneous disappearance from the story.
The 2025 revision increases mobility by adding burrowing and climbing, changes its physical-damage protection, and replaces the old fear action with Thunderous Bellow, which can also damage objects. Its bite and swallowed condition explicitly prevent teleportation, and Swallow becomes a bonus action. World-Shaking Movement produces a shock wave that breaks concentration and topples smaller nearby creatures; Onslaught combines movement with another attack. The revised Reflective Carapace also has a differently stated set of spell triggers. These changes make the edition essential to understanding its threat. Neither selected block supplies the universal, automatic regeneration or guaranteed immortality sometimes attributed to the name across older editions and retellings.
First appearances & development
The comparison uses Monster Manual (2014) and revised Monster Manual (2025), within the 2024 core-rules generation. The tarrasque has an older D&D history, but the earliest booklet and previous regeneration systems are not newly collated here. It remains distinct from the traditional Tarasque rather than inheriting every attribute of that creature.
Canon & continuity
The official individual legacy and revised records were read beyond the summary tables, including swallowing and legendary actions. They support the movement, protection, teleportation and spell-trigger distinctions. Attached discussion comments and homebrew stat blocks are excluded; no unsupported designer motive, unique-world population or mandatory narrative origin is inferred from the Titan tag.
