Overview
Squigs are a remarkably variable category of creatures associated here with the grots of the Mortal Realms. The familiar cave squig has a rounded body, strong legs and a large toothed mouth, but that silhouette does not define every beast called a squig. Individuals and named forms vary in size, sensory structures and uses. They can be eaten, driven into fights or ridden by handlers who accept considerable danger. The 2023 official guide places cave populations in dark hollows and describes specialized forms used to locate desirable fungi. This supplies a recognizable ecological and cultural setting without making the unruly animals safe domestic livestock.
The squig account is also a useful lesson in separating in-world explanation from established observation. Secondary documentation preserves greenskin origin stories and conflicting ideas about reproduction, while the publisher's guide frames some claims through comic testimony from a fictional Squigboss. Such accounts can convey grot beliefs without proving that a godbeast is the biological ancestor of every animal or that an intoxicated report of a realm-swallowing squig is literal fact. Giant cave squigs and chained Mangler combinations remain forms and uses within this entry rather than a catalogue of synonymous monsters. A separate Warhammer 40,000 Squiggoth profile supplies a specifically documented large Ork warbeast; parallels across those settings do not establish a shared continuous timeline. The Mortal Realms baseline is retained throughout this profile.
First appearances & development
This Squig account uses Age of Sigmar's Mortal Realms as its baseline, particularly the 2023 guide and 2024 faction focus. Similar names occur in other Warhammer settings, but no continuous cross-setting zoological history is asserted. Cave forms and specialist variants share the entry. Fictional origin legends are described as beliefs, not authenticated creation events.
Canon & continuity
The inspected publisher guide records cave habitat, variation, mounts and fungus-finding uses; a separate faction focus documents their battlefield context. Secondary documentation distinguishes contradictory reproductive proposals and origin stories. Comic fictional testimony is retained as a viewpoint, so extraordinary anecdotes do not become certified zoology. Exact rules and every named breed are outside this account.
