Overview

Slaughterfish are aggressive fish with sharp teeth, encountered across many of Tamriel's lakes, rivers and coasts. The name covers differing sizes and local varieties rather than one fixed model in every game. Their tendency to gather makes swimming especially dangerous, while foul or polluted waters do not necessarily exclude them. Scales and eggs provide alchemical materials, and their threat can coexist with food use. Different communities disagree about the appeal of their flesh, so a local recipe should not be treated as a universal dietary custom.

Oblivion gives the Rumare variety a practical story role in Go Fish. Aelwin Merowald asks for a dozen scales to sell toward his retirement after a fish injures his leg; the journal's emphasis on old age is not the same explanation as his dialogue. His reward, a water-breathing ring, fits the underwater task without proving that the fish grant water breathing biologically. ESO's How To Prepare Slaughterfish instead describes smoking a large fillet on an alder plank aboard a ship, using fire salts as fuel. The recipe's warning about combining fire salts and kindlepitch concerns a dangerous cooking process, not an innate explosive property of the animal.

First appearances & development

Daggerfall is the selected 1996 creature witness, followed by Morrowind, Oblivion and later games. Rumare fish are a named local variety within this profile. In-world recipes and regional opinions concern human or mer use; they do not establish a complete taxonomic tree or a separate species for every larger encounter.

Canon & continuity

The citation-bearing lore page, Go Fish quest body and complete cooking text were actually read through UESP's public API. The quest identifies injury, scale collection and reward; the recipe independently supports culinary use. Remastered marker or corpse behaviour is not transferred to the 2006 account, and no exact giant size or bite statistic is invented.
