Overview
Argonians are the reptilian peoples of Black Marsh, also called Saxhleel. Their relationship with the Hist, sentient trees central to their homeland, distinguishes them from generic lizardfolk. Water, marsh ecology and a history of exploitation by neighbouring societies shape many of their stories, without defining every Argonian individual's occupation or beliefs.
Morrowind places Argonians within the province's slave system and makes encounters with that institution part of its social landscape. Other games emphasize different communities and abilities. Claims about breathing underwater or disease resistance belong to particular game treatments; the Hist's significance belongs to the broader fictional culture. Individual histories still matter.
Children of the Root preserves an Adzi-Kostleel creation story through the fictional researcher Solis Aduro, whose introductory note says it is not otherwise attested. Root and serpent struggle, combine, and separate again; their shadow shelters its children through recurring destruction. A forest spirit teaches walking and speech, while blood, sap and changing forms organize the narrative. The text gives one community's way of imagining change and protection, rather than evidence that all Argonians share a single creation account.
In From Argonian to Saxhleel, Vicecanon Heita-Meen recounts escaping House Dres slavery and acting on a vision from a Hist tree. She leads forces to aid the Dunmer against an Akaviri invasion, presenting alliance as an opportunity to preserve Argonian life. Her account explicitly limits Pact participation to tribes of Thornmarsh, Shadowfen and Murkmire. This Second Era political testimony predates Morrowind's later setting within the fiction; its claim to legal freedom does not erase slavery in subsequent periods.
First appearances & development
Arena includes playable Argonians in 1994, and Morrowind places them within a later provincial history of slavery. The Online witnesses selected here concern Second Era politics and a Murkmire community tradition. Publication order and fictional chronology differ, so neither account is used to make every Argonian tribe politically or religiously identical.
Canon & continuity
Complete UESP transcriptions of Children of the Root and From Argonian to Saxhleel were inspected. They preserve a specifically attributed tribal myth and Heita-Meen's personal political account. The official Argonian archive page encountered an age-verification gate and was not read; the transcription is labelled Reference, not claimed as a fresh official-page reading.
