Overview
Reapers are winged creatures drawn to a rupture in time when Rose saves her father from the death she originally came to witness. They consume people caught inside the resulting disturbance, making the cost of a seemingly private intervention visible on a much larger scale. Their appearance is tied to that paradox rather than a routine population observed in an ordinary habitat.
The Doctor compares their function to an opportunistic process in a damaged system, and the official guide associates their arrival with the absence of Time Lord regulation. This explanation remains the story's science-fiction model of time, not a universal rule that every later continuity alteration must visibly produce Reapers. The emotional resolution also matters: restoring events requires Pete to act, rather than the Doctor simply defeating each creature in combat.
First appearances & development
Father's Day (2005) introduces Reapers responding to a damaged timeline. The selected 2005 television treatment is the narrative baseline. The second bibliography item is an official reference account, not an invented second narrative appearance. Licensed audio and prose can develop their own emphases, which are not silently merged into these scenes.
Canon & continuity
BBC Studios' linked creature or episode material supports the depicted connection between the time rupture and predation. The bibliography identifies the actual writer and selected production. Claims made by characters and inferred histories are kept separate from events directly depicted; one official guide does not establish all versions of the organism.
