Overview

The Scourge begins with specimens gathered from crop-damaged worlds. These small black beetlelike organisms burrow and attack vegetation, making their impact agricultural before it becomes immediately predatory. Researchers observe that withholding food unexpectedly prolongs their survival, but attempts to control the feeding cycle encounter a more dangerous adaptive capacity. When meat is introduced, the formerly sluggish insects become active and multiply rapidly. A containment vessel designed for a modest collection cannot hold the resulting swarm.

The outbreak reaches the Gamma Site during a visit by international observers, forcing SG-1 to protect people whose tour was meant to demonstrate safe and useful exploration. The insects pursue potential prey below ground and can reproduce using a human body, so escaping the initial laboratory does not end the danger. Their sensitivity to sound permits temporary defensive measures while the team searches for rescue. The episode links a creature's biology to the limits of human institutional confidence: reducing a threat to a manageable specimen collection proves unreliable when the researchers do not yet understand its responses. R75 is a project label rather than a biological species name, and the episode's connection with the Priors does not provide an independent account of how the organism was engineered. Its observed response to this particular experimental feeding regime should not be generalized into rules for every insect or every subsequent Ori weapon.

First appearances & development

The creatures' substantive screen appearance is the 2006 SG-1 episode The Scourge, written by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. R75 is the scientists' working designation in that story. The profile keeps the research outbreak and the Prior association within that episode instead of inventing an older natural-history lineage or later variant.

Canon & continuity

Richard Dean Anderson's cast-site lexicon describes feeding, burrowing, echolocation, adaptation and the human-host outbreak. The separately inspected episode guide verifies the Gamma Site tour, rescue and remaining off-world threat. These two reference witnesses support the episode account; no independently viewed creature-design interview or second substantive primary appearance was identified.
