Overview

BioWare's 2011 lore presents the people of the Qun through a social metaphor: different institutions serve interdependent parts of a collective whole. Its attributed narrator warns that outsiders mostly meet the military, an incomplete view of life in the cities. The ideology should not be mistaken for a literal shared organism.

Inquisition's Iron Bull demonstrates the tension between institutional service and individual attachments. BioWare describes him as a former hunter of spies, rebels and deserters, sent abroad by his superiors after that work exhausted him. He becomes the leader of a loyal mercenary company while still submitting reports to the Ben-Hassrath. Years beyond the Qun's rules leave him questioning his own identity. That introductory situation explains a conflict within one character; it does not mean every Qunari is secretly a mercenary or automatically abandons institutional loyalties.

Their military power also shapes other societies. A separate 2011 account attributed to Lady Alcyone describes Llomerryn's pirates cooperating against Qunari dreadnoughts during the New Exalted Marches. Their association subsequently continues and becomes a danger to merchant traffic. This is an outsider's historical explanation of an opposing institution, with its own moral judgment, rather than neutral testimony about ordinary inhabitants of Par Vollen.

The change from Origins' Sten to Dragon Age II's horned figures has documented production and fictional explanations. David Gaider states that some are born without horns and that their society can regard this as a distinction, while others remove their horns after leaving their beliefs. Artist Matt Goldman explains the redesign as greater visual differentiation among the game's peoples. Separately, Mike Laidlaw identifies earlier party-character and helmet difficulties as obstacles to realizing the horned design. The team retained Sten's established appearance rather than simply adding horns to him. These accounts explain a version change without treating hornlessness as proof of mixed ancestry or every departure from the Qun as physically identical.

First appearances & development

Sten in Origins is the selected 2009 game witness; direct 2010 and 2011 developer testimony documents the more distinctive horned design developed for Dragon Age II. The 2015 Iron Bull introduction concerns Inquisition's later individual portrayal. These publication contexts remain separate from an exhaustive reconstruction of the people's remote fictional ancestry.

Canon & continuity

The official lore, Iron Bull introduction and attributed naval history were inspected, along with complete relevant Gaider/Goldman and Laidlaw interview passages. Creator testimony supports the scoped design change. Social metaphors, enemy histories and one agent's biography supply different perspectives; no generic monster ancestry or uninspected cinematic design claim is added.

Cattle horn variation

Mike Laidlaw compared hornless Qunari varieties to cows when explaining Dragon Age II’s redesign and Sten’s appearance. He separately identified equipment-slot hurdles. This is a developer’s design explanation, not bovine ancestry.
