Overview
A Praetorian is an armoured, floating Collector combat construct built around fused organic victims. Its exposed mass of distorted bodies places it within the trilogy's conversion horror, while its protective shell and energy weapons make it a formidable combat encounter. Mass Effect 2 uses it at important Collector confrontations, including Horizon. Its appearance is a manufactured assembly rather than evidence for an ordinary breeding species of airborne animals.
The creature returned with the Collector faction in the original Mass Effect 3 multiplayer expansion Retaliation. BioWare's development account explicitly describes its boss role and a surrounding biotic sphere that blocks incoming powers, permitting supporting enemies to advance behind it. Those multiplayer functions are a particular implementation of the enemy, not immutable laws applying to every earlier encounter. Retaliation is a 2012 expansion; it should not be confused with the later Reckoning release. Legendary Edition's single-player collection does not reproduce that multiplayer treatment.
First appearances & development
Mass Effect 2 supplies the 2010 single-player creature, and Retaliation brings the Collector enemy faction into Mass Effect 3 multiplayer in October 2012. Those versions share a type while differing in mechanics. The later Legendary Edition collection omits this multiplayer context, so its bibliography alone would not establish the Retaliation behaviour described here.
Canon & continuity
Mass Effect 2 and the creature reference establish the Collector construct; the inspected BioWare development blog directly describes its Retaliation battlefield role. The official announcement independently dates that multiplayer expansion. Counts of fused bodies are not made essential where the checked primary anatomy is insufficient, and multiplayer powers are not generalized to every story encounter.
