Overview

Ogier are tall humanoids with broad noses and long tufted ears, living for several times a human lifespan. Their communities center on stedding, places with a particular relation to the One Power. Westland Ogier can suffer the Longing when they remain away too long; that condition emerged after the Breaking disrupted access to their homes. It does not make them simple forest animals or a permanently peaceful monster category.

The novels distinguish living culture from familiar craft stereotypes. Ogier build much of the great cities' stonework, but treesinging expresses a deeper relationship with living growth, and the Age of Legends visions place them singing with Aiel while Nym dance. Their elders deliberate through collective institutions such as the Great Stump. Seanchan Ogier serve as the fearsome Gardeners, showing that one people can have different political and military traditions. Loial's scholarship and choices are individual examples within that culture, not a full account of what every member thinks or a separate species of unusually friendly Ogier.

First appearances & development

The Eye of the World (1990) introduces the people through stories, buildings and Loial. Later books supply the Longing's history, field songs, Gardeners and major community debates. This profile follows the literary people rather than treating every culturally distinct group or television redesign as a new biological race.

Canon & continuity

Encyclopaedia WoT indexes stedding history, stonework, treesinging and Seanchan service by chapter. Its named primary witnesses support contrasting societies and individual examples. The Companion introduction acknowledges changes between author notes and finished texts; no inferred connection between the real Charleston street name and creature design is promoted as creator testimony.
