Overview

A Nym is a giant humanoid growth-being made for agricultural service in the Age of Legends. The remembered field scene in The Shadow Rising shows Nym dancing while Ogier and Aiel sing, promoting the health and growth of crops. That cooperative practice has a different purpose from summoning a creature to attack an enemy. Someshta's body makes the relationship visible through leaves, vines, grass-like hair and seed-like details.

The Eye of the World's Green Man is the particular surviving Nym placed to guard the Eye during the Breaking. His damaged memory and scarred head carry that long history into the travellers' encounter. He fights Balthamel by embracing him in destructive growth, then dies with an acorn that becomes a great oak. His garden begins to fail after his death. Those actions show a life-giving construct turning its power against destruction; they do not mean every Nym's normal agricultural work consists of killing people or that all trees growing near a shrine are revived Nym.

First appearances & development

The Eye of the World (1990) presents Someshta as the Green Man. The Shadow Rising (1992), chapter 26, later reveals Nym within earlier Age of Legends and Breaking memories. One profile joins the constructed being-type with its principal survivor instead of counting Green Man and Nym as unrelated species.

Canon & continuity

Encyclopaedia WoT's Nym and Someshta pages provide chapter locators for field work, guarding and death. Leigh Butler's publisher-hosted reread discusses the agricultural role and the Green Man imagery as critical interpretation. That comparison is not a newly inspected direct claim by Jordan about historical foliate-carving inspiration.
