Overview
The Blight's Worms inspire fear even in its other dangerous inhabitants. Their fluting cries warn the travellers in The Eye of the World, and their appetite is the dominant feature of the early account. Lord of Chaos identifies them as Aginor's jumara and indicates that those living in the Blight will not undergo their further transformation. The early novels do not supply a complete juvenile body plan, so the common name should not become proof that they look exactly like enormous earthworms.
River of Souls depicts Demandred facing a mature jumara in a cavern. The adult is a huge, many-legged creature with spines and tentacles, and directly applied One Power strengthens it. This specific encounter extends what the books' passing references establish. Sanderson explicitly considers River of Souls canonical even though its sequence was cut from A Memory of Light, unlike the alternate Perrin sequence later published as A Fire Within the Ways. The transformation's trigger remains unspecified. An adult profile and the Blight's untransformed creatures belong together here, avoiding both synonym padding and the assumption that every threatening cry implies the same visible anatomy.
First appearances & development
The Eye of the World (1990), chapter 49, introduces the feared Worms; Lord of Chaos later identifies Aginor's jumara. The mature encounter was published in River of Souls within Unfettered in 2013. Its fictional chronology and editorial removal are distinct from the date on which readers first received that account.
Canon & continuity
Encyclopaedia WoT and the source-indexed public Jumara revision distinguish heard juveniles, later terminology and the adult encounter. Sanderson's own series page confirms the short story's canon status, while Grim Oak Press confirms its title and credited authors. The individual Companion entries have not been read directly, and their ambiguous wording is not used to settle transformation conditions.
