Overview

The darkhound resembles an immense dog or wolf, but its signs overturn ordinary tracking. Its passing leaves marks in stone while soft ground shows none, and a sulfurous presence can announce it before a hunter sees the pack. Saliva is dangerously poisonous, making even slight contact threatening. Rain and running water can impede pursuit, but a quarry should not assume every rainfall provides a permanent escape. Packs are often described as a dozen or fewer; Perrin later finds the trace of a much larger one, and Masuri's research makes clear that historical pack counts are disputed rather than a reliable census.

The novels also distinguish durability. Perrin can kill one encountered near Illian with arrows, whereas the Rhuidean attackers in The Fires of Heaven re-form after ordinary injury and force Rand to use balefire. Applying the stronger form's resistance to every earlier darkhound would erase that difference. Wolves call them Shadowbrothers and explain that their souls have been corrupted; a darkhound can turn a wounded wolf by consuming its soul. At the Last Battle, the Horn of Valere calls dead wolves who can meet the packs, and Perrin's power-wrought hammer kills a darkhound that stays dead. This makes the creature part of the wolves' own struggle, with different means of resistance revealed in different encounters.

First appearances & development

The Dragon Reborn (1991) supplies the early darkhound hunting encounters indexed here. The Fires of Heaven (1993) introduces the particularly regenerative Rhuidean threat, while Crossroads of Twilight and A Memory of Light expand pack history and wolf relationships. These are literary variations within one profile, not four fabricated species debuts.

Canon & continuity

Two creature references expose exact chapter and glossary locators. Leigh Butler's A Memory of Light reread independently describes the Horn's wolves and Perrin's decisive weapon. Masuri's guesses and Perrin's fears about Wolfbrothers remain character knowledge, rather than confirmed universal outcomes. The profile does not claim every darkhound can be destroyed only by one spell.
