Illustrative pika; imagined setting.
Overview
This rabbit relative inhabits talus slopes and eats grasses, sedges and other plants. It remains active through winter rather than hibernating.
During the short growing season, pikas gather and defend vegetation haystacks. Shrill calls reveal their presence. Sensitive to heat, they favor cooler periods for activity.
