Overview
Nix-hounds are insectoid predators whose name compares their hunting role with a familiar canine. Their proboscis drains bodily fluids from prey, so the resemblance does not mean they are ordinary dogs with unusual skin. In-world owner guidance and game dialogue describe opportunistic feeding, while their social hunting makes an unnoticed group more dangerous than one isolated animal. Kwama are identified as relatives in the reference tradition, despite their different colony roles.
Morrowind and later ESO material supply different encounters and accounts of keeping these animals. A tamed individual therefore does not establish universal docility, and the species should not inherit every companion function of later add-ons. This profile uses the ordinary creature as the catalogue unit, keeping regional variants and named individuals separate. Reported creation myths and unofficial developer writings are not promoted into confirmed biological history; the inspected reference's citations distinguish those from released-game dialogue.
First appearances & development
Selected comparison: Morrowind (2002) and ESO (2014 onward). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Game lore and in-world narrators can conflict; gameplay abilities and playable body forms vary by title.
Canon & continuity
UESP's public MediaWiki API supplied the citation-bearing creature article; UESP is an independent reference, not an official publisher. Released games named in the bibliography are the canonical basis. In-game books, dialogue, mechanics and unofficial writings remain distinguishable within that reference. This task does not claim a complete replay or inspection of every later expansion.
