Overview

The 2018 Nightmare usually stays beyond comfortable melee reach and attacks through poisonous projectiles. Its nimble flight makes an accurate thrown axe or Atreus’s arrows valuable for bringing it down. Fire Nightmares substitute fireballs, while Exploding Nightmares approach before detonating. Kratos can also pull a Nightmare in with the Blades of Chaos and throw it into another enemy. The resulting blast makes the creature an environmental weapon as well as a threat, giving these small fliers an encounter role beyond simply adding more targets.

The Nightmare Parasite enters another enemy and strengthens that host. Stunning or killing the possessed creature expels it, creating an opportunity to eliminate the parasite before it enters another body. This describes possession in the selected game, not evidence that every Nightmare reproduces parasitically. The guide distinguishes faction assignments and notes a Gloom variant elsewhere in its Dark Elf section; that referenced section was not inspected for this profile. Fire, explosive and possessing forms therefore remain qualified combat variations, without a fabricated common life cycle or an additional profile for every projectile type.

First appearances & development

This entry uses the licensed 2018 guide as its bounded source. The Nightmare name is franchise-specific here and is not interchangeable with the Monstrous Nightmare dragon in How to Train Your Dragon. Later God of War games may add encounter forms beyond this selected edition.

Canon & continuity

The complete Prima Nightmare page provides ordinary, Exploding, Fire and Parasite sections, including the guide’s reproduced in-game tips. Their combat functions are paraphrased without quoting those tips. The page’s referral to a separate Gloom section is recorded as a coverage boundary, not evidence of an inspected additional species.
