Overview

An Ancient’s stone exterior resists most attacks. During combat its chest opens to reveal a vulnerable core; striking that opening dislodges volatile material that can be used against it. The licensed 2018 guide distinguishes elemental beams, missiles, mortars and nearby blasts, without assigning every attack to every form. Many lie dormant until disturbed. Others wander, including the Forest Ancient encountered near Fáfnir’s Storeroom. Their hearts and rubble have value to the dwarven smiths, connecting an imposing living landscape to the game’s equipment economy.

The 2018 codex associates Stone Ancients with Ymir but frames several observations as Atreus’s uncertain interpretation. The Ragnarök account is more specific about Vanaheim’s Forest Ancients: Vanir magic brings them together and disperses them within a season, making their ancient appearance misleading. Soul Eaters are a further complication. The guide attributes an accidental creation to Andvari’s experiments, while the later codex describes removed souls and hunger for those of others. These altered beings remain within this comparison; neither their artificial origin nor one forest form’s seasonal existence is generalized to every Ancient.

First appearances & development

The profile compares the licensed 2018 bestiary with selected 2018 and 2022 codex passages. Fire, frost, stone and altered soul-consuming forms are discussed together because the sources explicitly compare them. Their shared name does not establish identical origins, ages or elemental behavior.

Canon & continuity

Prima provides core vulnerability, elemental encounter variations, dormant and walking examples, resource use and Andvari’s experiment. Indexed codex passages supply the attributed Ymir account and the later seasonal Forest Ancient distinction. The child narrator’s earlier conjectures are not silently converted into omniscient cosmological facts.
