Overview
Nergigante is an Elder Dragon covered in spikes that regrow and harden, making its body change visibly during an encounter. Powerful horns, wings and forelimbs support a notably physical style of aggression. Its association with other Elder Dragons gives the creature an ecological role in World's story, rather than making it merely an unexplained boss placed at the end of a route.
Spike growth, breaking and defensive effects have specific game implementations that should not become universal numerical biology. Iceborne's Ruiner Nergigante is a named variant with additional features, not a replacement for the original profile. The recurring body and behaviour provide a clear identity while questions about ecology and extraordinary abilities remain anchored to Hunter's Notes and story evidence.
First appearances & development
Monster Hunter: World (2018) introduces Nergigante. This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Game Hunter's Notes and encounters are the baseline; subspecies, variants, spin-offs and numerical mechanics require title attribution.
Canon & continuity
Primary basis: Monster Hunter: World (2018); comparison: Monster Hunter World: Iceborne (2019). The linked secondary guide collates appearances and game descriptions. Hypothetical fan ecology is excluded; exact statistics and exceptional variant abilities must be checked in the selected released title rather than generalized across the series.

Flagship story role and defeat accomplishment
Tokuda says Nergigante’s development first needed a clear story role and a concept that would make defeating the main monster feel rewarding. This concerns World’s development brief, not fictional genealogy.
