Namazu (Final Fantasy)

Overview

Square Enix describes the Namazu as catfishlike beings. Their distinctive fish identity also appears in official game material: the Catching Catfish database entry lists a Namazu daily quest for level-sixty Disciples of the Hand or Land, with Namazu-related rewards and an Azim Steppe setting.

An official picture-book announcement credits lead story designer Banri Oda as writer and concept artist Hiroyuki Nagamine as illustrator. Its premise sends Namazu seeking rain when their river dries, with advice from a wise otter. The announcement is inspected here; the book’s interior and the exact relationship of its tale to game events are not claimed.

The publisher credits document authorship of that selected book, not an exclusive inventor of every Namazu design. No external inspiration is established. The unofficial illustration interprets the catfish form as a small river-side person; basket, clothing, light and exact facial details are imagined.
