Overview
Phoebe and Podcast encounter Muncher around the Summerville foundry, where it consumes metal rather than ordinary food. A chase turns that appetite into an immediate threat as the ghost spits metallic fragments. Capture does not end its usefulness to the story: when released in the jail sequence, its consumption of the bars permits escape. The licensed Hasbro description independently retains the defining metal preference. That advertised character trait is useful evidence; the toy’s button-operated motion is a product feature and is not adopted as a supernatural ability.
Brynn Metheney developed the large-mouthed design; Sheena Duggal’s tardigrade references helped establish its body after Jason Reitman responded to them. This is an artistic input, not fictional descent from a microscopic Earth animal. Later licensed games also require separation: ScARe changes the release and encounter context, while Spirits Unleashed adds Muncher to its Glutton implementation. Those adaptations do not rewrite the film’s sequence, establish a confirmed life as a miner, or make one game’s resource rules a universal ghost metabolism.
First appearances & development
The selected debut is the released 2021 Afterlife film. The profile additionally acknowledges the mobile ScARe adaptation and the later Muncher addition to Spirits Unleashed, keeping their implementation separate. Proposed development backstories are not accepted as a settled account of the apparition’s former human life.
Canon & continuity
The film-specific specialist body supplies the foundry, chase, jail and game differences. The licensed Hasbro page verifies the metal appetite. The complete fxguide production interview provides direct Metheney and Duggal testimony about design development; its animal reference is evidence of a creative decision only.
