Overview
The first film’s library investigation presents an apparition with an initially recognizable human outline. The parapsychologists approach it without a settled method for dealing with what they have found, and the encounter sends them fleeing. Its dramatic function is different from the later hotel capture: seeing a ghost and successfully containing one are separate achievements. The selected original-film synopsis does not identify the apparition by the later personal names or elaborate criminal history found in some licensed extensions.
John Alberti’s firsthand mechanism account explains how that sudden transformation was performed. He and his father simplified the puppet so that two operators could control it through four levers linked to roughly twenty cables. The mechanisms moved the face and jaw, drew the skin inward and extended the arms. This coordinated practical effect makes the transformation a screen performance rather than a catalogue of fixed supernatural organs. The source describes the original production apparatus; it does not demonstrate that the ghost has limited movement in-universe, or that every later library apparition repeats the same mechanical construction.
First appearances & development
This profile begins with the 1984 screen encounter and uses a licensed production interview to explain its execution. Later names and game-specific life histories are deliberately outside this bounded treatment because their underlying passages were not independently inspected here. The original character remains distinguishable from generic librarian ghosts.
Canon & continuity
AFI’s actual returned synopsis provides the investigation and retreat. Licensed Ecto-1 issue 16, with a 2023 copyright, contains the inspected John Alberti interview on pages 28–29. The testimony concerns his and Nicholas Alberti’s construction work, not an exhaustive account of the fictional apparition’s origin.
