Overview
Moopsy is a small pale creature encountered at an alien animal facility in Lower Decks. Its cuddly appearance and repeated vocalization suggest an innocuous exhibit, but it feeds by drinking bones and can rapidly leave a much larger victim without a skeleton. That abrupt reversal supplies the episode's central animal hazard: visual cuteness is a poor guide to a predator's feeding adaptations in an unfamiliar ecosystem.
The encounter supplies the principal narrative basis for this profile, and StarTrek.com's official scene clip directly identifies its bone-consuming behavior. The clip is an excerpt from the same episode, not evidence for an independent second story or a complete species history. No homeworld, evolutionary explanation or universal upper limit on prey size is invented here. The name denotes the particular presented creature type; later merchandise and fan speculation do not extend its documented physiology.
First appearances & development
Introduced in I Have No Bones Yet I Must Flee (2023). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Prime-universe screen stories are the baseline; reboot timelines and tie-in novel details are excluded.
Canon & continuity
The listed screen works are the primary narrative basis. The linked official StarTrek.com material identifies this creature and supports the selected appearance or behavior, while editorial interpretation is distinguished from an episode's demonstrated events. Selected television continuity is followed here; licensed fiction, games and later appearances are not exhaustively surveyed.

Family, evolution & connections
Pokémon and cute emoji design vocabulary
Supervising director Barry Kelly directly describes wanting Moopsy to feel like a Star Trek Pokémon, linking its cute graphic design to Pokémon, emoji, toys and tactile candy-like appeal. This supports a broad visual design vocabulary rather than a particular borrowed species. Its bone-drinking danger remains part of Lower Decks’ own story; the interview does not establish Pokémon-style evolution or a canonical connection between the fictional universes.
