Overview

Mugatos are large, pale primate-like predators with a head horn, tail and dorsal spines. In A Private Little War, a bite nearly kills Kirk before a local healer treats him, establishing venom as a central danger. The later Lower Decks episode Mugato, Gumato places captured animals far from their native habitat and reveals a poaching operation that sells their pelts and horns.

The later story broadens their ecology through social and reproductive behavior while emphasizing that the species is endangered. Their aggression therefore coexists with a conservation narrative rather than proving that eradication is appropriate. StarTrek.com's episode discussion documents both appearances and explains several variant pronunciations and production names. This entry treats those names as references to the same creature, keeps the two screen treatments distinct in tone, and does not claim that a real ape shares the Mugato's venom or horn.
