Overview

Sehlats are large fanged animals associated with Vulcan, first introduced through Amanda Grayson's recollection of Spock's childhood pet. Journey to Babel compares the pet with a teddy bear before revealing teeth that make the comparison misleading. Yesteryear then depicts I-Chaya, whose loyalty and protective behavior place the animal at the center of a young Spock's difficult experience with injury and death.

The Forge provides a later live-action depiction of a wild sehlat, distinguishing the broader animal from one domesticated companion. These selected appearances support both a dangerous physical form and the possibility of an affectionate relationship with a Vulcan household. They do not establish that every wild individual behaves like I-Chaya. This profile excludes a comprehensive survey of licensed novels and later incidental references; the bibliography preserves the difference between an initial dialogue mention and a subsequent visual debut.
