Overview
The huge tardigrade called Ripper is discovered aboard the damaged Glenn in Star Trek: Discovery. Its imposing appearance initially encourages weapons research, but Burnham recognizes a relationship with the mycelial network that allows it to navigate the spore drive's jumps. The creature is therefore both a misunderstood animal and an unwilling participant in the ship's experimental propulsion, rather than merely a monster surviving in a wreck.
Repeated use harms Ripper, and Choose Your Pain makes that distress central to the crew's ethical decisions. Culber refuses to force the exhausted animal back into service, while another navigator makes its release possible. This profile concerns the fictional spaceborne organism, whose enormous size and network relationship should remain separate from real microscopic tardigrades. Selected first-season episodes and official franchise discussions support these claims; later propulsion developments do not establish that all navigation requires the animal.
First appearances & development
Introduced in Star Trek: Discovery (2017). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Prime-universe screen stories are the baseline; reboot timelines and tie-in novel details are excluded.
Canon & continuity
The listed screen works are the primary narrative basis. The linked official StarTrek.com material identifies this creature and supports the selected appearance or behavior, while editorial interpretation is distinguished from an episode's demonstrated events. Selected television continuity is followed here; licensed fiction, games and later appearances are not exhaustively surveyed.

Family, evolution & connections
Tardigrada (water bears)
StarTrek.com explicitly compares Discovery’s spaceborne tardigrade with Earth’s microscopic animals. Animal Diversity Web describes real tardigrades as small animals with four pairs of legs. The shared name and stated resemblance support this comparison; they do not establish an exact species model or creator testimony. Mycelial navigation, enormous size and resistance to fictional weapons belong to the television creature, not real tardigrade biology.
