Overview
The metal-eating fly is an insect-like extraterrestrial specimen in Alien: Earth whose food includes the materials of artificial bodies. It has wings and six legs, and can shelter within a nest or cocoon. A projecting feeding structure releases a corrosive substance that breaks down metallic material before ingestion. This makes a synthetic-bodied hybrid vulnerable to predation that an observer might incorrectly expect to target only organic flesh.
The Fly, the sixth episode, turns the specimen's feeding into an immediate crisis when Tootles is trapped in its enclosure. The episode places laboratory routines, an unsecured transition and the animal's unfamiliar diet in the same chain of events. The profile uses the descriptive organism name because an independently verified formal binomial is not supplied by the inspected sources. Its insect-like outline supports comparison, while its origin, full breeding cycle and relation to terrestrial flies require evidence beyond visual similarity.
First appearances & development
The fly-like specimen belongs to Alien: Earth's 2025 first-season collection, with its feeding becoming central to the sixth episode, The Fly. The profile concerns that organism rather than the separate eye parasite, whose production nickname can also contain midge. The descriptive name deliberately avoids promoting an unverified fan taxonomic label to canonical species nomenclature.
Canon & continuity
The independent organism reference provides the material-feeding mechanism and Tootles encounter, while the released episode is the primary narrative work. FX's official guide verifies the episode framework. The sources are sufficient for a fictional diet and threat profile, but do not establish a complete formal taxonomy or a real biochemical explanation for metal consumption.
