Overview

The blood tick, also called Species 19, is the leech-like extraterrestrial parasite carried among the Maginot's specimens in Alien: Earth. It attaches to a victim and becomes engorged as it removes blood, making an initially small animal capable of a fatal attack. Larval infestation introduces another danger inside the host, so removing one visible organism does not necessarily resolve exposure. The descriptive tick name is not proof that it belongs to a terrestrial arachnid family.

Jonathan Rothbart's production account explains that the team worked through the blood sac and the organism's use of blood as a hatching environment when designing its movement and young. That is direct testimony about the fictional creature's development, kept distinct from a medical description of real parasites. The season uses both internal and external attacks to defeat confidence in containment: the specimen is neither a harmless laboratory curiosity nor a facehugger with a different skin. Its broader natural environment remains unexplored by the released season.

First appearances & development

Blood ticks are among the Maginot specimens in Alien: Earth's 2025 first season, including the shipboard infestation treatment in In Space, No One…. Species 19 is an in-story catalogue label rather than a real zoological designation. Their blood-feeding and offspring are treated together; larval and engorged forms are not counted as additional species.

Canon & continuity

The direct Rothbart interview explains blood storage and the conceived reproductive environment, while the independent species reference documents the season's attacks and infestation. The primary episode supplies the shipboard context. The profile makes no medical inference for real ticks and does not treat every secondary theory about toxins, physiology or extraterrestrial ancestry as settled screen fact.
