Overview
Donají Cuéllar Escamilla's 2023 study discusses several attributed Oaxacan versions. In Gerardo Melchor Calvo's Zaachila account the apparition may resemble a loved or familiar woman in white; Joaquín escapes after noticing that she leads toward the cemetery. A Huamelula version concerns a young man on his way to meet his girlfriend, whose refusal is followed by a forceful cold wind. The episodes do not all depend on the same visible transformation.
A 2025 Miahuatlán report describes the woman leading solitary intoxicated men toward thorny huizache, where scratches break the enchantment. The account gives alternative absent feet or goat hooves, rather than one fixed body. The Museum of the Island's 2025 Matlazihua exhibition, organized through an Oaxacan project led by Manuel Castro López and Joy Juárez, brings the figure into painting and sculpture while encouraging the collection of additional oral experiences.
Origins & earliest records
The scholarly study cites twentieth-century versions, including Calvo's 1960 Zaachila account, but these earlier works were inspected through Cuéllar's discussion rather than independently. The 2025 museum and journalistic witnesses document current circulation. Proposed connections to a death goddess or a 1737 epidemic are interpretations, not a demonstrated first attestation or single historical origin.
Records & interpretation
Cuéllar's indexed version discussion, the complete Miahuatlán report and the museum's exhibition announcement were inspected. The study's full journal page produced a redirect loop. The newspaper leaves its local narrators unnamed, while the museum record verifies the exhibition project, not supernatural encounters or agreement on the apparition's anatomy.
