Overview
Carrasco, Contreras and García describe a young man mocking a rock and trickling water that resemble a woman urinating. Transformed into stone, he becomes Mankián, a ngenlafken or owner of the waters. The story connects a human figure, rock and water.
Chile’s 2016 architectural guide places Mankian within Lafkenche relationships with the sea. It identifies a stone-transformed cultural hero around whom a gillatun of thanksgiving or petition is celebrated, with fish, shellfish and seaweed as the returned abundance. This gives the figure a continuing coastal religious setting. The guide separately names Abuelito Wentellao at Pucatrihue; similarity in stone and water symbolism does not make the two names interchangeable.
Origins & earliest records
The 1998 scholarly study identifies five Mankián versions in a wider oral corpus collected in south-central Chile during 1982–1990. Its interpretation concerns living narratives, not a dated invention. The 2016 government guide records the figure’s cultural relevance for contemporary public design. Rock identification, narration and ritual association require their local contexts.
Records & interpretation
The full 1998 article directly supplies the mockery, transformation and water-guardian identity in its Mankián section. Printed pages 25 and 38 of the inspected 2016 guide supply the coastal religious setting and distinguish Wentellao. Carrasco’s earlier dedicated paper was reached as an image-only PDF; its uninspected pages contribute no additional episodes.
