Overview
Tolkien Gateway describes Maggot as a shrewd farmer at Bamfurlong. Frodo fears him because of earlier mushroom thefts and encounters with his dogs. When a Black Rider asks about Baggins, Maggot refuses its offer of payment and orders it away.
Later he welcomes Frodo and his companions, tells them about the stranger and drives them toward the ferry. A basket of mushrooms from his wife accompanies their departure. This profile follows the published book account, excluding the article's darker draft versions and adaptations.
