Overview
The rebels’ apparently obscure base world is already inhabited by predators. Krykna move on six powerful legs, with eyes around the head and a durable pale hide that resists ordinary blaster fire. The official Databank describes underground hives where captured prey are cocooned. Their predation on smaller dokma connects the danger to Atollon’s wildlife rather than solely to visiting rebels. In The Mystery of Chopper Base, attacks and the capture of Rex expose the cost of assuming that an uncharted location is empty. Sensor markers provide an effective deterrent, allowing the base perimeter to be defended without eliminating every animal.
Later episodes turn the same creatures into a test of Kanan’s perception and fear. Specialist coverage describes their sensitivity to negative emotions and the difficulty of making peaceful contact through the Force. That context complicates the first appearance as relentless attackers: the visitors’ state of mind can matter. It does not make the species harmless under all conditions, nor does it guarantee that any Jedi can dominate an individual. Official Rebels Recon text identifies Ralph McQuarrie’s earlier spider concept as the design basis. Kilian Plunkett explains the change from eight legs to six as an animation practicality. This is a production decision rather than an account of an in-world evolutionary loss of limbs.
First appearances & development
Krykna debuted in the 2016 Rebels episode The Mystery of Chopper Base. Their visual development reused an older McQuarrie concept, which is not itself a prior canonical creature appearance. The later Kanan stories expand behaviour without replacing the original predator, prey and sensor-deterrence account of life on Atollon.
Canon & continuity
The Databank directly supplies limbs, hide, hives and deterrence. Inspected specialist passages describe the later Force-contact scenes. The official Recon video’s written description contains the McQuarrie and Plunkett testimony; the video itself was not watched. These sources establish story behaviour and production history as different kinds of evidence.

Ralph McQuarrie’s eight-legged spider concept
The official Rebels Recon description attributes the krykna concept to McQuarrie. Art director Kilian Plunkett explains the change from eight legs to six as an animation simplification. This evidence is the published written description, not independent viewing of the interview video.
