Overview

In the origin-of-brewing narrative told during the wedding preparations, Kalevatar brings small objects to Kapo. A splinter leads to the creation of a snow-white squirrel; a birch chip to a golden-breasted marten; and a pod, rubbed on the maiden’s knee, to a honey bee. They share a sequence of separate attempts to animate the unfermented drink.

The squirrel safely crosses eagle-haunted woods and brings pine shoots and fir cones, but these fail. The marten gathers foam from fighting bears; that too produces no fermentation. The bee flies across the ocean for honey from flowers beside a sleeping maiden wearing a copper belt. Its return supplies the successful ingredient in the myth, making the drink overflow its vessels. These created helpers belong together in this narrated task and are not identified with the separately summoned bee of Lemminkäinen’s restoration.
