Overview

Lemminkäinen’s mother calls on a tiny bee after she has recovered and rejoined her son’s scattered body. His senses and speech are still absent. The bee first gathers sweetness from forest flowers, returning with honey on its wings. This helps his wounds but does not complete the restoration. Its second journey crosses seven oceans to an enchanted island; honey from small kettles there also fails to restore speech.

The mother then directs it above the moon and stars to Ukko’s dwelling. The bee doubts its small wings, but completes the ascent and returns laden with honey and life-giving balsam. The mother tests and applies this final remedy; the hero awakens and speaks. The stages distinguish ordinary floral sweetness, island enchantment and heavenly aid. The episode gives an insect an extraordinary cosmic journey rather than stating a real medicinal property of bee products.
