Overview
An account quoted by Westervelt names two forest women above a hau grove in Nuʻuanu: Hau-ola, represented by a long smooth stone on the seaward side, and Ha-puu, by a rounder rough stone. Fern leaves are placed upon the former and lehua flowers on the latter. The text identifies them as kupua and connects them with safe passage and protection of children.
The appendix also quotes an 1825 voyage report describing offerings to two goddesses at the pali, and reports a separate ancestral custom of placing children’s navel cords beneath the stones. These are mediated historical testimonies reproduced in 1915; the original voyage text was not independently collated here. No claim is made about present-day access, current offerings or permission to disturb the stones.
