Overview

The 2024 developer preview introduces Grim as flying gun-bearing creatures with a screech that interferes with Guardian abilities. In the encounter reference, the cry causes a distinct tinnitus effect that slows movement, disrupts jumping and impairs vision; it is not silently equated with every other suppression status. Flocks reposition above or around other enemies, creating threat from angles unavailable to ground troops. Wommack’s direct interview describes a long-standing wish to use bat wings, with animation and movement work needed to make flight convincing without making the enemy intolerably difficult to hit.

Claws of the Flain, added with 2025 Heresy material, provides a later origin narrative. The Witness restrains a dissenting fragment of its own collective and divides its consciousness among manifested creatures. Their shrieks echo that forced transformation. A colony can nearly recover a sense of its former unity while roosting or flying together, but deaths and mixing with other colonies further erode recognition. This directly inspected account supersedes the earlier conquered-species conjecture as the profile’s selected explanation; it does not erase the historical fact that observers initially guessed differently. The creature is both an aerial combat role and a remnant of violated identity.

First appearances & development

Grim first appear in Destiny 2: The Final Shape (2024). Episode: Heresy (2025) later supplies the inspected Claws of the Flain narrative, also reproduced on related armor pieces. Those repeated item texts are one shared witness, not three independent stories or three sources with separately expanded copyright allowances.

Canon & continuity

Bungie’s official preview supports the flying weapon and cry. The direct Wommack interview supplies the animation aim. Ishtar Collective preserves the inspected Claws of the Flain game text, supporting fragmented consciousness and colony memory. Destinypedia supplies selected encounter effects. Later Champion rules and every empowered subtype are outside this profile’s scope.
