Overview
The geth are artificial intelligences associated with the quarians' rebellion and exile. A separately labelled reference account identifies the quarians as their creators and distinguishes the programs from the mobile hardware they occupy. That distinction matters: a mechanical body is not automatically equivalent to one organic individual, and the different battlefield platforms need not represent independently evolved biological species.
The official BioWare merchandise biography gives Legion as a particularly clear example. This autonomous unit contains a consensus of 1,183 geth programs and is designed to operate independently while communicating with organic beings. First encountered on a derelict Reaper, Legion can become part of Shepard's team. The number belongs to this named unit; it should not become a universal population inside every geth body or a claim that all encounters lead to the same recruitment outcome.
The Haestrom mission guide describes geth occupation of a former quarian research colony and extensive orbital platforms. This force threatens Tali's expedition, but local hostility cannot define every program's relationship with organics. Legion's possible cooperation keeps the collective people larger than an enemy roster.
BioWare combat designer Corey Gaspur's November 2012 multiplayer advice supplies another distinct context. He uses a Geth Infiltrator with tactical cloaking, Hunter Mode and networked-AI choices, while describing geth enemies as dangerous at range but without instant-kill attacks in that mode. Thus geth can be a player class and an opposing faction within the system. This is original Mass Effect 3 multiplayer guidance, not a timeless law of synthetic anatomy or a claim that every later edition preserves the same balance.
The reference account also reports that the novel Revelation precedes the first game's portrayal and summarizes branching later conflicts. That publication history is secondary here. Neither Legion's existence nor an optional alliance fixes every player's resolution of the geth-quarian conflict; exact choices and later artificial-intelligence outcomes require their own version-specific witnesses.
First appearances & development
The reference source identifies Revelation (2007) as an earlier appearance than the first game; no complete novel was newly read. Selected primary publication witnesses concern Mass Effect 2's Legion portrayal and the original Mass Effect 3 multiplayer article in 2012. These are distinct from a modern merchandise page's publication date or current stock status.
Canon & continuity
The official Legion product biography and complete Gaspur developer blog were read, excluding reproduced quotations and commercial measurements from lore. Selected complete Haestrom passages supply occupation context. The general history and program-platform distinction are explicitly reference-based. Embedded art, new gameplay and an exhaustive outcome comparison are not claimed.
