Overview
III’s Garuda is the transformed adviser Gigametz, who controls Saronia’s King Gorn. After the king resists killing Alus, the monster attacks the party. Its Lightning attack makes Dragoon Jump valuable for avoiding damage. This hostile birdlike figure precedes the later wind ally.
XI’s Garuda is a celestial wind avatar challenged at the Cloister of Gales. A summoner can gain her assistance, combining claws and wind attacks with Aerial Armor, Hastega and limited healing. These named support skills belong to XI’s system, not universal animal abilities.
XIV’s Garuda is the Ixal’s queen of storms, beautiful in movement but cruel and unpredictable enough to frighten her own worshippers. Their Xelphatol homeland and raids for wood offerings connect her cult to conflict with Gridania. The Ixal’s lost flight and vestigial wings describe her followers, not proof that the primal is their biological ancestor. The Howling Eye’s Extreme duty narrative depicts an exceptionally powerful attack that destroys a Twin Adder brigade, leaving the order to seek help from the Scions and Warrior of Light.
These appearances preserve an avian motif while changing element, allegiance and story function. Garuda’s religious namesake remains a separate cultural subject. This profile distinguishes the recurring game creature from regional traditions and does not make every birdlike Final Fantasy enemy a member of one Garuda species.
First appearances & development
Garuda debuted in Final Fantasy III in 1990. XI develops the wind-avatar role and XIV the Ixal primal in separate worlds. The early opponent, celestial ally and storm deity are independent manifestations, not an evolutionary sequence connecting numbered games.
Canon & continuity
The franchise reference supports the selected III and XI histories and abilities. XIV’s official Garuda page supplies personality and the Ixal context, while the Howling Eye Extreme synopsis documents the renewed threat. Exact combat values, summon acquisition alternatives and all crossover appearances are outside this bounded comparison.
