Overview
Erestor, Elrond's chief counsellor at Rivendell, participates in the debate over the Ring's future. Tolkien Gateway's account describes him favouring concealment and protection rather than destruction, suggesting Iarwain ben-adar as a possible guardian. Glorfindel and Galdor oppose the proposal because they doubt that he could withstand Sauron's power. After the war, Erestor accompanies Arwen to her marriage with Aragorn in Gondor.
The account also distinguishes the published character from Tolkien's earlier planning. Drafts make him a half-elven kinsman of Elrond and at one stage envisage him among the Company's nine representatives. The finished narrative does not call him a half-elf. These rejected possibilities illuminate the character's development, but they do not establish a published ancestry or a journey with the Fellowship.
