Overview
Delta Vega's drakoulias has a heavy quadrupedal body, unusually powerful forelimbs and a fanged, batlike face. It belongs to the film's icy planet near Vulcan, rather than the unrelated Delta Vega visited in the original series. When Spock strands Kirk there in 2258, the animal charges after him through snow and mist. A hengrauggi intercepts it before it can reach its quarry. The sequence briefly places the audience beside vulnerable wildlife as well as a vulnerable human: the first frightening predator becomes the next predator's victim.
Neville Page called his design Polarilla. His initial bat-headed polar-bear sketch developed toward a gorilla and polar-bear combination; he intended it as the chase's misleading first threat. These are production references, not evidence of Earth ancestry. The film's speed and obscuring snow leave much of the modeled detail difficult to inspect. Foster's licensed novelization also describes the creature through Kirk's comparison with familiar animals. Neither witness establishes a social organization, reproductive cycle or a measured population-wide size, so the single chase should not be expanded into a complete alien zoology.
First appearances & development
The creature debuted in the 2009 film's alternate timeline, with a same-year licensed novelization by Alan Dean Foster. Polarilla is a production nickname for this creature, not a second species. This account centers on that film encounter; it does not infer a matching prime-timeline population from other species shared between timelines.
Canon & continuity
Page's directly inspected interview supplies the design history. Indexed specialist accounts identify anatomy and connect the filmed chase with the licensed novelization; the publisher confirms the latter's author and 2009 release. These witnesses have different functions: a designer explains manufacture, while story references describe the fictional animal.

Family, evolution & connections
Abominable Snowman
Page describes the Polarilla as an Abominable Snowman-like decoy for Kirk’s 2009 chase.
Gorilla and polar bear
Page says the Polarilla developed from an early bat-headed sketch toward gorilla and polar-bear references; this describes production design.
