Overview

The displaced image is a predatory advantage rather than an extra animal: a target can appear to be hunting from a nearby position while its body occupies another. Publisher accounts associate these creatures with the Feywild and the Unseelie Court’s trained hunters, followed by escape from domestication and movement into the Material Plane. Their interest in pursuit can exceed feeding alone, giving a hunt an unsettling element of sport. Riley Silverman’s 2023 overview also places roaming packs in Ravenloft’s Valachan, including a particularly cunning animal allied with Chakuna. This is a setting-specific partnership, not a universal leader or temperament imposed on every displacer beast.

The publisher’s legacy-era tactical discussion identifies both displacement and Avoidance, the latter reducing damage from effects that permit a saving throw. It also points to The Wild Beyond the Witchlight’s kitten, distinguishing a young companion possibility from an automatically obedient adult. Silverman proposes training-related adventures and even the disruption of poaching operations; these are suggested campaign uses rather than mandatory rules of domestication or crafting. Honor Among Thieves brings the monster into an arena hunt, preserving the uncertainty of pursuing something whose image misleads. A guardian, roaming pack and kitten are related treatments of the creature without being counted as independent species or granting every tabletop character a guaranteed pet.

First appearances & development

The selected framework is Monster Manual (2014), with The Wild Beyond the Witchlight and Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft (both 2021) supplying the kitten and Valachan treatments identified by the publisher. Honor Among Thieves (2023) is a separate screen presentation. Earlier-edition appearances and the revised 2025 block are not newly surveyed.

Canon & continuity

Silverman’s July 2023 publisher feature was read in full, separating actual book references from suggested adventures. The April film-creature feature independently supports the feline presentation, illusion and sporting hunt. The individual monster link redirects to a product page, so this profile does not falsely claim freshly inspected locked stat-block text or exact displacement interruption rules.
