Overview
A darkmantle makes a cave's apparently inert surfaces dangerous. The reproduced revised third-edition SRD describes a muscular attachment foot, tentacles and a membrane that can fold into a rocklike outline. Limestone coloring can change to match other stone. It hangs above prey, drops to cover the head and may return overhead after a missed attack.
That older text makes high-frequency sound the basis of its blindsight, with magical silence negating it. Its classification is magical beast. The 2014 official profile instead calls it a monstrosity and gives explicit False Appearance and Echolocation traits: remaining motionless disguises it as a cave formation, while deafness prevents use of its blindsight.
In the legacy Crush action, attachment to a Medium or smaller target's head requires an advantaged attack. The victim is blinded and unable to breathe. The attached creature moves with its captive while its own speed becomes zero; detachment is a separate action or voluntary movement expenditure. Its concentrated darkness aura excludes ordinary darkvision and natural light and dispels overlapping light from sufficiently low-level spells.
The revised official block calls the creature an aberration and still lists blindsight, but does not list the old False Appearance or Echolocation traits. Its advantaged Crush explicitly causes suffocation, and the target's attempt to detach it uses Strength (Athletics). Revised magical darkness cannot be illuminated by light; the block does not repeat the legacy low-level-light-spell dispelling clause.
These differences separate form, perception and rules. Rock disguise described by an older witness is not an added automatic trait in the revised stat block, and lack of an Echolocation line does not identify a new sensory organ.
First appearances & development
The 2000 manual remains earlier bibliography. Newly inspected older anatomy and ambush behavior come from the revised third-edition SRD reproduction. Two official fifth-edition blocks supply separate procedures. Changes among magical beast, monstrosity and aberration are version classifications, not a documented biological transformation.
Canon & continuity
Complete reproduced older text and official legacy block were read, alongside the complete revised official indexed body. Anatomy, disguise and auditory perception are separated from changed stat-block listings. No original manual reread or artwork inspection is claimed. Reader-proposed encounters are not used as published lore.
