Overview
The legacy game description combines lizard, bird and bat features in a compact, unpleasant hybrid. Its ability to fly makes it mobile despite its small size, and darkvision helps it remain dangerous beyond daylight encounters. The creature’s physical attack carries a magical consequence out of proportion to an ordinary peck: petrification can remove a victim from action even when the initial injury is slight. The selected record lists no language and places it in grassland encounters. That does not settle an exhaustive diet, nesting cycle or training system, and it provides no reason to import a traditional cockatrice’s gaze, breath or origin from an unusual egg.
The 2014 Bite begins a two-stage process. A first failed resistance restrains the victim while stone transformation develops; a successful follow-up ends it, but a second failure leaves the victim petrified for a day. The revised 2025 Petrifying Bite keeps that staged structure and duration while making the creature’s own immunity to petrification explicit. It also changes the ordinary block’s hit-point total. These are meaningful edition differences within one creature profile, not evidence of a new biological subspecies. The profile distinguishes a bite-triggered condition from the basilisk’s differently triggered power, so two familiar stone-making monsters remain separate encounters rather than interchangeable names.
First appearances & development
The selected publication witnesses are Monster Manual (2014) and the revised Monster Manual (2025), belonging to the 2024 rules generation. The page’s legacy description supplies this edition’s hybrid appearance. A complete earlier-edition history is outside this comparison; traditional cockatrice accounts are not used as unqualified D&D biology.
Canon & continuity
Both individual publisher stat blocks were inspected, including the legacy descriptive paragraph and the revised immunity. Comments attached to these pages are not publisher rules and are excluded. The comparison uses the actual listed bite procedure rather than assuming that every petrifying monster works through eye contact.
