Overview
A Salvadoran-born woman in USC's folklore archive recalls her mother's account of a wagon passing towns at midnight. Spirits conduct it and take away people in its path. She and her sister believed they heard the wheels at night, while acknowledging imagination or fear might explain the sound. Looking back, she understood the story as a warning against wandering outside after dark.
A school retelling credited to Gloria Cecilia Díaz supplies an origin episode: a man claims his cart needs no priestly blessing because the devil has blessed it. His oxen refuse to enter the church, break free, and the wagon rolls away with him. CONAMYPE's contemporary exhibition instead emphasizes backward travel, squealing wooden wheels, chains and bones. These are distinct tellings and portrayals; the account of a heard wagon does not independently confirm every detail shown in the exhibition.
Origins & earliest records
The USC entry was posted on 12 May 2019 by collector AJ and documents family transmission through a Salvadoran-born speaker. The inspected Salvadoran education guide presents a credited written retelling without an established edition date here. CONAMYPE's exhibition page is also undated. These witnesses provide no first oral date or single origin plot.
Records & interpretation
The USC text and posting metadata were inspected through native page retrieval after browser failure. The school guide's complete short episode was available in institutional indexed text; its full PDF remains inaccessible. CONAMYPE supplies an independently inspected exhibition description. The speaker's own uncertainty about remembered sounds is retained rather than recast as a confirmed supernatural encounter.
